Many people cannot afford medications or home nursing and may spend their final months in considerable pain and emotional distress. Ganga Prem Hospice is the inspiration of Dr. A.K. Dewan (Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, New Delhi) who, after a lifetime of work in clinical oncology, has dedicated himself to meeting the dire need for charitable end-of-life care. I am posting this blog by one of my fellow retreatants at Auschwitz, for those of you who want to get a little taste of what it was like to be in the camps and see it with our own eyes. Those photos and text are a small snapshot of a vast picture. This picture of human's cruelty to human is too big to be seen with the physical eyes. It had to be seen with the eyes of the heart… and the heart must expand to become as wide as the world to encompass it. I would see the sun in the sky … setting over the camp and lighting up the birch trees with golden radiance and I would cry out in despair and rage: "How can you rise over this fucking place!!!" But of course, the sun does rise over all of it … over the good and the bad; over the high and low; over the rich and poor; over the sick and the healthy; over murderers and Saints. And so we have to find a way to be with it all without looking away, without judging, without condemning the perpetrators or ourselves. To BEAR WITNESS is NOT to condone or make excuses; it is not to turn our eyes away and pretend that we are more holy and good and could never be like that. If we look in our own hearts we can see that we all have the capacity for ultimate goodness and ultimate hurtfulness. Everyday we make choices to live and act somewhere between these two extremes. May our choices and the choices of all our brothers and sisters bring them true happiness and may we all be led from falsehood to truth, from the unreal to the Real, from darkness to Light, from death to Immortality. Om peace, peace, peace.
